Symbol//Signal by Abbey Hall
Symbol//Signal uses two formats to represent the interlacing of objects and emotions, focusing on the brain’s strengths and fragilities in creating, editing, and reinterpreting memories. Symbol is a series of prints using breeze blocks and vibrant colour schemes that represent Abbey’s memories of Darwin when she was away from home. Signal is a series of paintings using still life to bring together disparate memories through important personal themes and events.
Abbey is an multi-disciplinary artist from Darwin. She combines her interests in still life and neuroscience to develop semi-fantastical interpretations of memories, exacerbating the notion that memories are subjective, networked, and modifiable in their recollection. The significant re-interpretation of memories with current experiences and interests creates both a new memory of the present, and an ‘adjacent memory’ of the original experience.
